Abstract

Recent experimental study and first-principles calculations in the literature revealed the existence of a C36 laves phase in the Mg 2Ca-Al2Ca pseudo-binary in addition to the C14-Mg 2Ca and C15-Al2Ca. In the present work, more detailed first-principles calculations were carried out for all three laves phases in the Mg-Al-Ca system. The phase relations in the ternary system were investigated by inserting the C36 phase into the ternary system and compared with experimental observations. Simulation of X-ray diffraction patterns indicates the possibility of the existence of C36 in alloys previously studied.
