Abstract

Several NZP waste forms prepared under different conditions were leach tested at 25 degree C as well as at 100 and 200 degree C under hydrothermal conditions for 1-4 weeks with a confining pressure of 30 MPa. The NZP waste forms optimized with respect to sintering temperature and time and Na//2O additive have excellent leach resistance both in deionized water and saturated NaCl under hydrothermal conditions. The leach resistance of optimized NZP waste form is superior to that of PNL 76-68 borosilicate glass under similar conditions. These results show that NZP waste form is a viable option for the immobilization of nuclear wastes.
