Abstract
Learning to use a word processor provides a study of real complex human learning that is fundamentally 'active', driven by the initiatives of the learner - which are, in turn, based on extensive domain-specific knoweldge and skill, and on reasoning processes which are systematic yet highly creative. State-of-the-art application systems and their training materials presuppose 'passive' learners and are - to that extent - unusable. Some general design implications of active learning were discussed.
