Abstract

Simultaneous measurement of both length and velocity of a thin sheet of paper on a moving plate was successfully done by using the speckle phenomena in two self-mixing laser diodes, which are aligned parallel to the plates moving direction and illuminate vertically onto the sheet surface. The measurement error was less than 6mm. This main result verify that the method is useful to measure a long moving sheet of paper or steel.
