Abstract
Building Information Modeling (BIM) can enable frequent and rapid evaluation of energy performance of buildings throughout the design phase of a project. The most widely accepted data schema for a BIM is the Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) schema, which is an open standard format for representing information about a project. To leverage an IFC model for energy modeling, geometric information in a model must be translated to an equivalent energy simulation analytical model structure. A workflow is presented to address this need by automating information transformations from the IFC model with geometric and attribute information into an energy analysis model structure in the OpenStudio® energy performance simulation platform.
