LGBTI Perspectives on Clinical Issues and Approaches in Later Life

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

The estimated 2.7 million older LGBTI adults in the US, alone, represent diverse, at-risk, underserved populations that face minority stress, insufficient legal rights, stigma and discrimination, and pervasive economic, social, mental, and physical health disparities associated with increased risk of impoverishment, depression, social isolation, caregiving burden, barriers to care, HIV infection, chronic illnesses, various cancers, and suicidality. Older transgender and minority LGBTI adults face additional disparities. Recommendations for future research and culturally competent practice including staff training and supervision, an older LGBTI adult-friendly physical environment, evidence-based therapies like life review, and continuing education and advocacy are provided.
