Abstract

The Westwood Generating Station is a 30 MW anthracite culm fired plant located near Joliett, Pennsylvania along interstate 81. The culm firing technology is based on the Combustion Engineering -Lurgi circulating fluidized-bed combustion (CBFC) technology first introduced into this country in boiler applications in the mid-80's. The advantage to this technology is its ability to handle low grade fuels and the introduction of sorbent material to control SO2 emissions. This paper documents investigative tests to reduce limestone costs by challenging manufacturers recommended limestone selection. The operators are chartered to constantly examine and test performance requirements while maintaining all environmental requirements.
