Abstract

The student-initiated design project and the kinds of steps which can be taken to formalize the educational aspects of the design experience are discussed. Several methods for linking the projects are also presented which include development of a project-specific design course, independent-study projects, and providing design mentoring to volunteers. Student design projects are generally found to contain a large cast of volunteers, which are suggested to be best harnessed via active involvement by the faculty advisors or industry or government mentors. Linking the design projects is suggested to be an important method for supplementing the array of much needed design opportunities available to students.
