Abstract
The phenomenon of small scale loop structuring of F-region ionogram traces is investigated; this loop structuring is shown to be caused by high-frequency ray propagation through irregularities in which dN/dz is less than ambient but greater than zero. A process of fitting generated ionograms to observed ionograms is described and this process is used to find scale sizes and amplitudes of loop trace causing irregularities for some specific data. The loop trace phenomenon has been observed during radio star scintillations and during spread-F.
