Lung-deposited particle surface area (LDSA) and black carbon (BC) in high-rise apartments in Seoul, Korea

Abstract

This study investigates residential exposure profiles of lung-deposited particle surface area (LDSA) and black carbon (BC) in urban high-rise apartments. Time-varying LDSA and BC concentrations were continuously measured over a period of 7 days in four high-rise apartments in Seoul, Korea from January 18 to April 25, 2016. Indoor LDSA ranged from 46 to 58 µm2/cm3 while indoor BC concentrations were between 1.1 and 1.6 µg/m3. The highest indoor LDSA was observed for the apartment with a gas stove, which was higher than those with an induction stove or no stove. BC concentrations were consistently higher in outdoor than indoor air regardless of gas stove usage, implying that BC is a better indicator of the contribution of outdoor sources to indoor exposure.
