Abstract
The problem of phocanema (worms) infestation in codfish is important to the economies of several regions and in particular to many northern countries. The fish processing industry presently uses human inspectors to visually inspect and manually remove the phocanema from the codfish. This paper describes experiments to determine the feasibility of using a machine vision system to perform the visual inspection and gives information about the phocanema infestation problem along with current methods of control. The characteristics of machine vision systems are discussed along with how they are applied to the inspection of codfish for phocanema infestation. The paper gives recommendations on the installation of a vision system in a fish processing factory and for further research.
