Abstract
Several attempts have been made to elucidate whether exposure of living organisms to magnetic fields (MF) is harmful, beneficial, or neutral. Concern appears as a consequence of human exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMF) generated by household appliances and from the hypothesis that if MF were able to modify biological processes, they could be advantageously used in diverse areas. Areas of specific focus include those in which microorganisms play an important role, such as food preservation and pharmaceutical and fermentative processes.
