Abstract
A project is described that was undertaken to investigate the nature and cost of a development effort which would result in a knowledge-based expert system for one mining machine. The system would improve maintainability by providing a tool which can quickly identify problems and recommend appropriate repair action. The issues studied include determining the type of shell which would be suitable, the time and cost required, the type of personnel qualified for such a effort, and the impact the system would have on mining operations.
