Abstract

Colonic volvulus, or twisting of the colon on its tethered mesentery, is a rare cause of bowel obstruction in the Western world. The most common site of volvulus is the sigmoid colon followed by the cecum. Other less common sites of colonic volvulus exist as well. Clinical presentation can range from chronic intermittent symptomatology to acute pain, obstruction, perforation, and shock. This chapter discusses the surgical management of colonic volvulus.
