Abstract

Mandel's problem considers the time-dependent, quasi-static deformation of a rectangular, laterally pervious specimen of fluid-saturated, poroelastic material after confinement by a suddenly applied, steady load from the top and bottom. Biot's theory of poroelastodynamics is used to generalize the analytical solution to this problem by accounting for the inertial body forces when the specimen is subjected to harmonic excitation. The poroelastodynamic solution entails and extends the well-known Mandel-Cryer effect of coupled poroelasticity in frequency domain.
