title = "Manufacture and test of extension-twist coupled energy absorbing composite tubes",
abstract = "Novel extension-twist coupled composite energy absorbing devices are manufactured and tested for the first time. The absorbers consist of a concentric pair of fiber reinforced tubes that twist in opposite directions when loaded in axial tension. Energy is dissipated in an annular region of foam in between the two tubes. Carbon fiber reinforced elastomeric matrix composites are used for their excellent extension-twist coupling characteristics. Tension grips that allow for free rotations at one end of the device while the other end is clamped were devised for demonstrating the feasibility of the energy absorption concept. The force-displacement characteristic of the devices is shown to be highly dependent on the fiber angles of the tubes. Fiber orientations of ±30 provide superior strength, while the ±45 orientations provide superior load-limiting behavior. The devices are under current investigation for potential applications in preventing payload and equipment mounting point failures in rotorcraft during crash events and thereby improving crashworthiness.",
