Abstract
Data are presented that analyze 3,646 adolescents’ responses to questions regarding their perceived ideal ages for marriage and first birth. The racial and gender differences that were obtained were then contrasted with vital statistics data on out-of-wedlock births to young women from the same geographical area. This comparison suggests that the adolescents’ responses are reflective of the norms of the communities in which they live.
