Abstract

One approach for improving damage tolerance in epoxy based composites involves interleafing of tough adhesive layers between plies of the composite prior to fabrication. Extension of this technique to high temperature bismaleimide (BMI) materials has been accomplished with thermoplastic films as the interleaf material. The interleaf films used in this study are surface treated Kapton, Mylar, and Cyanamid's E-film. These films are interleafed with Cyanamid's Cycom 3100/IM6 prepreg material. In this study the authors have explored the effect of various surface treatments on Kapton films and American Cyanimid 'E' film on bond strength. A screening test has been developed which determines the effect of surface treatment on bond strength.
