Abstract

This paper investigates the concept of measuring controllability in a cellular system and subsequently analyzing how it is affected by increased flexibility along with other important system parameters. Specifically, the potential system performance benefits of increased routing flexibility will be considered juxtapose potential problems created by a more complex production control task. Three measures to quantify system controllability will be introduced and used in experimentation. Discussion of the experimental results shows not only the direct relationship between flexibility and controllability, but also demonstrates potential interactions between flexibility and other system factors that further affect controllability.
