title = "Mechanical heart valve closure dynamics",
abstract = "A laser Doppler velocimetry study has been conducted to understand the mechanical heart valve closure dynamics. A Bjork-Shiley Monostrut mechanical heart valve was modified by removing a section of the titanium housing and replaced with an acrylic window. A single shot mechanical heart valve chamber that simulates the mitral valve closure dynamics was used as part of the flow study. The results suggest that velocities, Reynolds stresses and turbulent intensities are high enough to induce hemolysis. In addition, vortices develop that may contribute to cavitation leading to microembolic signals (strokes or neurologic deficits) that occur during and post implantation.",
