Abstract

A database was constructed using the traction data from 115 tests in order to examine trends and effects. Traction calculations were formulated using an elastic/plastic rheological model in the presence of spin. Values found in the literatre were reproduced using the TRIBOS computer program. An example is given of the asymetric plot of the traction curve slope versus spindle skew angle. The program was used to examine the behaviour of lubricated concentrated contacts with microscopically rough surfaces under combined rolling, sliding and spinning with and without contamination; and also to develop processes for analyzing digitized rough surface profiles to produce surface descriptors which can predict performance within acceptable systematic and random errors.
