Abstract
The mechanisms of the preelectrochemical reactions involved in electrodeposition of Ge(IV) from acidic catechol have been studied by means of Koutecky's analysis of the limiting current. Dissociation of the triscatechol complex and reaction of Ge(OH)4 with one or two catechol moieties have been identified as the important preelectrochemical steps. The electroactive complexes are the mixed catechol-hydroxy complexes Ge(OH)2L, Ge(OH)2L2, and possibly GeOHL. Adsorption of the electroactive species precedes electroreduction, but electron bridging does not seem to be important. It is postulated that a trans effect in the mixed complexes facilitates deposition by increasing the ease of release of the coordination sphere.
