Abstract

Medical physicists have a multifaceted role within the healthcare system. Though their exact role varies with their subfield, they contribute to patient safety, diagnostic and treatment efficacy, education, regulatory compliance, and technological advancement. To become a qualified medical physicist, a trainee must follow a standardized pathway integrating complex scientific knowledge with practical clinical expertise. This knowledge must be verified through an independent certification process. Ethically, physicists must be committed to maximizing patient benefits while minimizing risk. They must also conduct themselves professionally. Physicists must also understand and influence the business of medicine. Physicists can optimize clinical cost efficiencies by preventing equipment failures, optimizing resource use, ensuring regulatory compliance, and preventing injuries and repeat procedures. Due to the dynamic nature of healthcare, medical physicists must be supported by various resources, including professional organizations, continuing education, and collaborative networks.
