title = "Metamaterial enhanced antenna systems: A review",
abstract = "Recent advances in the field of metamaterial enhanced antenna systems are reviewed. The addition of metamaterial surfaces or lenses is shown to significantly improve antenna performance over what is achievable with conventional antennas. This includes soft horn antennas with low cross-polarization, short backfire antennas with high aperture efficiency and low cross-polarization, near-zero index metamaterial lenses for directivity enhancement, as well as capacitively loaded electromagnetic bandgap structures for broadband and omnidirectional surface wave suppression.",
