Abstract

In this paper, we present a methodology for achieving near-perfect electromagnetic cloaking and illusion beyond the quasi-static limit by using single layer ultrathin metasurfaces. In contrast to previous work on metasurface cloaks where only isotropic impedance surfaces have been considered, here we exploit both the non-vanishing tangential and radial responses of the metasurface coating. As a result, its anisotropy can be engineered to tailor the scattering properties of a coated object of a moderate size beyond the quasi-static limit. It will be shown that near-perfect scattering reduction can be achieved with a properly designed single metasurface layer. We further propose, for the first time, a near-perfect metasurface-enabled electromagnetic illusion coating.
