Abstract
The emergence of new materials and technologies due to the developments in materials processing is discussed. Microwave processing has been successful due to its ability to minimize gain growth and produce a fully dense ceramic without using high pressure. Developments in microwave application has allowed sintering of various powder metal components, thus producing useful products including small cylinders, rods, gears, and automotive components in 30 to 90 minutes. Furthermore, focus in future will be to convert laboratory microwave technology success into commercial successes in speciality material synthesis and sintering.
