Abstract
The application of microwave heating in the synthesis of aluminum oxynitride (ALON) was investigated. Microwave synthesis was conducted using a 1.5 kW, 2.45 GHz single mode microwave applicator under 1 atm flowing ultrahigh purity nitrogen gas. The phase composition of the starting materials was pure α-Al2O3 and AlN. A single phase ALON was observed after microwave firing at 1650 °C for 60 min with densities of 3.04 g cm-3.
