N2 - This paper provides an overview of and introduction to the mid-frequency range finite element (MFR-FE) approach developed by Soize in the early to middle 1980s for structural dynamics and structural acoustics. The method, combining elementary signal processing with standard low frequency finite element time integration, allows for the solution of structural and acoustic finite element problems at frequencies higher than is usually feasible using traditional FE methods. The approach is explained, and an example model problem is explored using FEs implemented in MATLAB. One overall goal of this paper is to introduce MFR-FEs to the U.S. aeroacoustics community which currently seems unaware of the approach.
