Abstract
The scattering and propagation properties of millimeter waves at 94- and 140-GHz frequencies in rainfall are investigated. The results for model raindrops with spherical and oblate spheroidal shapes are compared for side-looking and vertical-looking configurations. The significant effects of raindrop shape on the interpretation of the Doppler spectrum for vertical-looking radars are illustrated. Relationships between rainfall rate and radar reflectivity, attenuation, differential attenuation, and differential phase shift at 94- and 140-GHz frequencies are derived and proposed for use in remotely estimating rainfall intensity.
