Abstract
According to the authors, a mine monitoring system is a tool whose time has come. The combination of sensor advancements of the 60s, communications progress in the 70s and inexpensive microprocessor capabilities of the 80s have resulted in a tool having wide potential for improvement of mine performance. Monitoring has already been utilized for ventilation, belts and bins, pumping, drainage and haulage. However, the greatest potential for monitoring systems in mining is enhancing management's performance by improved decision making. The paper presents a hypothetical analysis procedure for calculating additional incremental coal production required to justify the introduction of these systems in existing mines.
