Abstract
The learning process involved in acquiring knowledge and skill in the computer domain is considered a very difficult one. This difficulty, and the ongoing efforts to change it, is referred to as the 'training problem. ' This training problem is studied for the past three years, chiefly in the area of word processor operator training. A variety of commercial systems, prototypes, and training approaches, are studied using numerous psychological methods. An overview of a set of design implications, referred to as Minimalist design is, derived from research. The training problem is described, and the Minimalist design is defined - both in terms of principles and a design process. Finally, two case studies are reviewed to exemplify the usefulness of the approach.
