Ministry and sport

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

The integration of the Christian faith with sports in the United States dates back to the late 1800s with the emergence of the muscular Christianity movement. This laid the foundation for the implicit intertwining of faith and sports, contrasting it with the explicit function of sport ministries. The rapid growth of the YMCA during 1880-1920 exemplified this integration, providing a platform for men to merge physicality with spiritual beliefs. Following World War II, various ministries utilized sports for moral and spiritual development, establishing connections within communities. The 1970s-1990s witnessed a shift as non-church-based ministries began serving teams and athletes directly by offering spiritual care and mentorship. These ministries offer holistic support, including spiritual guidance and outreach at major sporting events. Sport ministries cultivate mutually beneficial relationships with teams and athletes, promoting spiritual beliefs while aiding personal and competitive success, managing uncertainty, fostering team unity, and providing balance to sports participation.
