Abstract

Results of an experimental examination of the mixed convective heat transfer characteristics of a vertical plate embedded in a water saturated porous medium are presented. The results are for the variation of local Nusselt number for different heat fluxes. The results are given as power law relationships between Nusselt number and Rayleigh, and Peclet numbers. Mixed flow is shown to greatly increase the overall heat transfer coefficient, due to the imposed forced velocity. Close to the leading edge of the plate the effects of wall channelling appear to be important. Wall channelling results from the porosity at the wall being larger than the bulk porosity. For the large, spherical shaped bead experiments the effect of channelling was evident at a significant distance up the plate.
