Abstract
A study was conducted at the Crew System Interface Division of the Air Force Research Laboratory to gain a better understanding of the mutual interplay of understanding, modeling, and measuring teamwork within complex systems. The study utilized such innovative concepts as theoretical orientations, cognitive engineering, cognitive field research, cognitive modeling, and team schema similarity measurement to situated military contexts. One particular project focuses on modeling C 3I operations using the fuzzy cognitive map method. The initial assessment of the method indicates it as an effective way of eliciting knowledge in a form that is easily and directly transformed into models of team processes.
