Abstract

The state-of-the-art in seismic loss assessment has evolved from using empirical and observational information to formulate vulnerability relationships to the use of mechanics-based, representative and transferable models of vulnerability. To complement transportation modes presented in other papers in the current Conference, a sample of advanced models for vulnerability of buildings and bridges is presented in this paper to give an indication of the new trend in use of sound mathematics and physics to replace empirical data that is not just regional, non-adaptable and non-transferable, but also of unknown levels of uncertainty.
