Modification to a turbulent boundary layer due to slot injected drag reducing polymer solutions

The modification of a flat plate turbulent boundary layer resulting from the injection of drag reducing polymer solutions through a narrow inclined slot into the near wall region of the flow was studied in a closed loop water tunnel. Two component laser Doppler velocity profiles were measured with polymer injection, water injection, no injection, and with dilute polymer ocean flows. The immediate effects of polymer injection were found to be a deceleration of the flow, a decrease of the vertical rms velocity fluctuation levels and the Reynolds shear stress levels and a mean velocity profile approaching Virk's asymptotic condition. These effects relaxed substantially with increasing streamwise distance from the injection slot, and became similar to those resulting with the polymer ocean cases. (from authors' abstract)
