Abstract

Knowledge on lignin biodegradation has grown with the discovery of lignindegrading enzymes in 1981 (Tien and Kirk, 1983; Glenn et al., 1983). This finding has allowed researchers to apply modern methods of biochemistry, biophysics, and molecular biology to the study of lignin biodegradation, research that has lead to the recent cloning and expression of the lignin peroxidase genes. This review will focus on the molecular biology of lignindegrading enzymes. The progress of the last 2 years will be summarized, as well as the most recent unpublished results from our laboratory. Unpublished findings from other laboratories will be included where appropriate.
