Abstract

A deterministic model is developed to calculate instantaneous and time-dependent deflections using a finite element approach. Monte Carlo simulation is performed to evaluate variability of deflections due to uncertainty of material properties and dimensions involved in the computation of deflections. The results of a parametric study are presented showing the effects of design variables on the variability of slab and beam deflections. The results confirm that variability of deflections can be high when the applied moment is close to the cracking moment, the reinforcement ratio is low, and the ratio of live load to dead load increases.
