Abstract
The analytical development of a multilevel hypothesis testing algorithm and its application to the extension of a sequential bilevel test procedure reported earlier are presented. The multilevel test procedure characterizes M distinct categories of malfunctions in continuous processes like those found in aircraft, spacecraft, and nuclear power plants and is suitable for generating early warnings and fault diagnostics. The test procedure has been implemented on a commercially available microcomputer for online diagnosis of sensor failures in an operating nuclear reactor.
