Abstract
Advantages of using carbon nanotubes as reinforcement materials for polymer matrix composites is investigated. Scanning electron microscopy images of composite materials subjected to fracture revealed marked differences in the adhesion of epoxy to the metal mesh. In fractured samples using bare meshes, severe wire pullout, detachment, and debonding between the polymer and metal was observed. In samples coated with carbon nanotubes, wires were found to remain in intimate contact with the surrounding matrix. This indicated that carbon nanotubes acted as a distributed interface, which bonded the two dissimilar materials.
