Abstract

The current chapter is organized in sections articulating the two main clinical perspectives on how to best conceptualize narcissism: (1) narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) as extreme expressions of grandiosity, reflected in DSM NPD, and (2) pathological narcissism as states of grandiosity and vulnerability. We review key assessment practices and supporting research for both perspectives. We then review important associated clinical features and treatment of NPD and pathological narcissism.
