Abstract

A brief description of submarine safety (SUBSAFE) program is presented. The purpose of the SUBSAFE program is to provide maximum reasonable assurance of watertight integrity and assured capability to recover from a flooding incident. Maximum reasonable assurance is achieved by certifying that each submarine meets very specific submarine safety requirements at the moment of its delivery to the Navy and then by maintaining that certification throughout the life of the ship. If a submarine loses its SUBSAFE certification, then it is not allowed to submerge until that certification is regained.
