Abstract

Ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes are known neurological complications of hematological diseases, due to the fact that most hematological abnormalities lead to either thrombosis in the cerebral vasculature or brain hemorrhage. Various hematological diseases are associated with ischemic stroke, while hemophilia is associated with hemorrhagic stroke. More recently, three novel oral anticoagulant agents have been approved for primary and secondary stroke prevention in patients with atrial fibrillation. The use of the novel anticoagulants does increase the risk of intracranial hemorrhage and bleeding at other sites. We present one institution’s guidelines for the reversal and management of bleeding complications with these novel oral anticoagulants.
