Abstract
Tough Coated Hard Particles (TCHPs) is a class of nanostructure materials providing an unprecedented integration of multiple property extremes in ultra-performance tools, mechanical components and thermally applied coatings. The performance characteristics and wear behavior of the TCHP cutting inserts compared with top-rated, manufacturer-recommended TiCN/Al2O 3 CVD coated tools optimized for machining gray cast iron was used for cast iron machining. Powder from the first TCHP production lot produced was hot-pressed and EDM'd into SNU-432 inserts for cutting trials. All cutting corners were inspected optically for irregularities and approved square cutting inserts were individually labeled. It was observed that TCHP maintains a distinct cutting edge in insert test, without any material optimization or edge polishing. TCHP inserts maintain a sharper cutting edge longer than the benchmark inserts and its flank wear is relatively lower.
