Abstract

The researchers have found that dewatering affects the production of volatile sulfur compounds (VSC) and the dewatering equipment affects VSC emission characteristics. The odorous compounds emitted by high-solids centrifuge biosolids cakes include methanethiol, dimethyl sulfide, indole, skatole, and p-cresol. High solids centrifugation affects VSC production by increasing protein liability and inhibiting metanogenesis. The utilities should consider impacts of post-digestion solids handling and storage processes on product odors when evaluating their biosolids recycling program.
