Abstract

In this work, a nonlinear Proportional-Integral (NPI) controller is presented for controlling the injection speed of a 150 tonne injection molding machine. The delayed feedback was compensated by using a Smith Predictor which obtains the future state of the output for control. The process gain and time constant vary during closedloop control because of the nonlinear characteristics of the system. The system is approximated as a first order plus dead time model. In this control approach, the NPI parameters are retuned every sampling instant using the nonlinear variables of the process. The control performance of the proposed method is compared to a PI controller with improved results.
