Abstract
Pain is the most frequent complaint and reason why patients visit medical providers. While opioid analgesics remain the mainstay of pain control in the acute setting, the benefits in chronic pain have been questioned. Overprescribing of opioid for acute and semi-acute pain has led to dependence in millions of Americans. It has been also responsible, at least partially, for opioid abuse and a closely related abuse of heroin. In the light of the current opioid epidemic, tremendous efforts have been made to develop new opioid ligands which are void of euphoric effects and medications whose action is targeting various pain mechanisms.
