Abstract

Covering a broad range of sexual and gender identities, this chapter provides a succinct, yet comprehensive, overview of family violence in LGBTQ+ communities. The state of the science regarding the theoretical grounding for violence, its differential drivers, forms, and risk factors as applied to LGBTQ+ people, and health outcomes related to violence are discussed. A review of definitions of sex, gender, and sexual orientation, as well as the nurses’ obligation to provide culturally safe care, grounds this chapter. Issues pertaining to the measurement and screening of violence in this community are reviewed, followed by a practical guide for affirming physical assessment of the post-abuse, gender-diverse client, appropriate terminology, and reporting guidelines.
