note = "Funding Information: The experimental results are shown in Figs. WII6-2 and WII6-3 for both the TE0 and TEi modes. The transmission curve for TEj exhibits directional hysteresis as predicted, but the TEo mode remains linear, again as predicted. That the details of the curves depend on numerous factors such as the transmission at the liquid-crystal interfaces in addition to the mode structures and departures from the idealized case is not surprising. However, the results do indicate the excitation of two different modes, one of which is characterized by fields localized outside the film. The excitation of these modes has application to bistability, optical limiters, etc. (Poster paper) This research was supported by NSF(ECS-8117483) and the Joint Services Optics Program of ARO and AFOSR.; International Quantum Electronics Conference, IQEC 1984 ; Conference date: 18-06-1984 Through 21-06-1984",
