Abstract
The X-ray photoelectron spectra of several lead-oxygen species are reported. During the oxidation of freshly evaporated lead surfaces, chemisorbed oxygen atoms on lead as well as rhombic and tetragonal PbO can be detected. The unique sensitivity of O 1s spectra to the different crystal modification has also allowed the monitoring of a polymorphic transformation on oxide films as thin as a monolayer.
